Fast-dissolving oral films: A revolutionary approach to migraine management

Abstract: Migraines are crippling neurological conditions that need to be treated quickly and efficiently to enhance sufferers' quality of life. A novel medication delivery method, oral dissolving film (ODF), has distinct benefits, such as a quick onset of action, ease of use, and increased patient compliance. ODFS avoid the problems with conventional dose forms, such as prolonged the process of absorption, digestive tract reactions and insufficient compliance in nauseous patients, by being made to dissolve quickly inside the cavities in the mouth without the need for water. The formulation and assessment of ODFS, especially designed for migraine treatment, are examined in this review, with an emphasis on the choice of polymer compounds, pharmaceutical ingredients, and excipients that are essential for obtaining the best possible release of drugs and film stability. The most popular preparation method, solvent-casting, is covered along with the physical and chemical as well as pharmaceutical evaluation criteria. Examples include disintegrating time, bending strength, and medication content homogeneity. The research also discusses the benefits of ODFS in migraine management, such as increased bioavailability, faster relief, and compatibility for paediatric and geriatric groups. While emphasising their potential to transform migraine treatment, the review addresses difficulties such as taste masking and stability, paving the way for future breakthroughs such as nanoparticle-loaded films and personalised medicine methods. ODFS are set to change migraine treatment by closing the distinction between effective medicine and patient-centred care.
